In 1893, three estranged sisters reunite in New Salem and turn half-forgotten nursery rhymes into witchcraft as they join the fight for women’s power. To survive the forces hunting them, they must rebuild their bond and recover the lost words and ways of women’s magic.

If The Witches of Cambridge worked its spell through fablelike language, women finding family, and old persecution bleeding into the present, The Once and Future Witches deepens each pleasure. Alix E. Harrow builds an alternate 1893 from nursery rhymes, half-lost lore, and image-rich prose, then centers three opposite-tempered sisters whose broken bond must become a force for collective resistance. Its magic stays rooted in ordinary words and women's work, but the menace gathers into a more propulsive, openly political fight.

Choose this when the source's female solidarity mattered as much as its witch-lit atmosphere.

Harrow's history occupies one transformed era rather than braiding centuries, and her anger burns hotter than Hoffman's autumnal melancholy. The trade is greater intimacy with each sister—and a sharper revolutionary edge—without losing the patient buildup, wonder, or hard-won hope.

Come for Hoffman's lyric spell; stay for sisterhood turned uprising.

Island Light, Female Counterpoint

Six-year-old Sophia and her indomitable grandmother spend a summer exploring, arguing, inventing, and quietly grieving on a tiny island in the Gulf of Finland. Across their small adventures, the wild landscape becomes a place to reckon with love, freedom, fear, and the approach of death.

Witchcraft and historical menace disappear, yet an enchanted landscape and intimate female counterpoint preserve Hoffman's reflective emotional spell.

  • The source's spell of place exchanged for windswept island intimacy
  • Female counterpoint recast through a headstrong grandmother and girl
  • The same patient pleasure in image-rich episodic scenes
  • Gentler mortality and grief without witchcraft or persecution
